Twenty-five female Chicago Hope Academy students and chaperones drove from Chicago to Camden, Maine, to participate in the sailing trip of a lifetime. (On the way they even made a scenic stop at Niagara Falls). They set sail east from Camden to Mount Desert Island, visiting various deserted islands along the way.
Led by Jamey Copeland, a friend of Chicago Hope, the students sailed on the Mercantile, a fully restored sailing vessel. The Mercantile is a National Landmark schooner and was prominently used in coastal trade at the turn of the century.
Life on board the Mercantile is determined by the sun and nature, a major change of pace from big city life. Some of the students on the trip had never been outside of Chicago. Chicago Hope Academy looks forward to seeing our female students enjoying life aboard the Mercantile for many summers to come!
