With an enrollment of 165, Hope Academy is the smallest school in the 256-team playoff field. But that doesn’t mean the closely-knit Eagles, led by four-year starting quarterback Ricky Mancilla, aren’t thinking big.

Football is one thing Ricky Mancilla takes seriously, but it is hardly the only thing.

Mancilla is the four-year starting quarterback at Chicago Hope Academy, a private school in the Near West Side’s Tri-Taylor neighborhood. On Saturday, he and the Eagles (7-2) return to the IHSA playoffs after a one-year hiatus when they play a Class 1A opener at Abingdon-Avon.
